It’s the first day of the 7th annual ‘FranCon Comic Book Convention’ in Carver Valley and the village is full of costumed comic book fans buzzing with excitement for the celebrations, none more so than FranCon’s creator Timothy Argo (Will Brown).

As he makes the final preparations, he gets a mysterious call from renowned anonymous comic book writer Aequitus, telling him the latest issue of his newest comic has been left for him at the cemetery. With stepsister Stella (Ruby Bentall) in toe, Timothy collects the comics and takes them back to their house for the night. However, that night an unseen burglar breaks into the house and steals the box of comics before burning them on the front lawn.

DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and pathologist Dr Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland) are at the scene of the crime where they get introduced to Timothy’s mother Dr Juno (Gemma Redgrave) and Stella’s father Sheriff Isaac (Nicholas Farrell), a delusional man who believes he is the law of the town.

Barnaby wants to call an expert on the matter, and he knows just the man; DC Jamie Winter(Nick Hendrix). Not-so-secretly a budding comic fanatic, Winter is more than happy to jump on the case and looks into Juno’s past where he learns that her first husband Lord Conrad Argo, a former Sheriff, was brutally murdered by a burglar two years ago. On that same night Conrad’s sister, former supermodel Francesca had been knocked into a coma, to which she has remained in ever since.

Barnaby and Winter are shocked when they get a call to inform them that someone has been choked to death with the latest Aequitus comic, leaving the police confused; so not all copies of the latest comic were burnt?

Winter reads through stacks of Aequitus’ comics, noticing one major difference in the latest comic; normally they present a quaint slice of village life, but the latest issue seems to be far more personal, naming and totally shaming six prominent villagers, seemingly handing them their list of suspects.

Alongside interviewing these suspects, Barnaby is keen to find out the real identity of Aequitus, positive that whoever they are they seem to know who the murderer is. Just as they begin to hone in on who the comic book creator is, the search reaches a literal dead end…

Barnaby and Winter are back at the drawing board, trying to discover what links the two murders. Barnaby goes back through the events of that dreaded night two years ago. Are the horrors of the present the result of the actions from that one fateful night? With the clock ticking he needs to catch the killer before their third victim meets a gruesome end.

Guest starring in Drawing Dead are Bill Bailey, Ruby Bentall, Jemma Redgrave and Nicholas Farrell. Midsomer Murders is made by Bentley Productions, part of All3Media and is the UK’s top-rated drama export.
