Midsomer Murders: For Death Prepare airs Sunday 28 May 2023 on ITV.

The late SIR HUNTLEY EMPSON, a Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, founded the Midsomer Mummers, a local amateur operatic society, 100 years ago. The Empson Playhouse, a converted mill on the grounds of the Empsons’ beautiful Brattlington Estate, is still the site of regular productions by the Mummers.

The formidable LADY KATISHA, daughter of Sir Huntley, is the current owner of Empson Estate; she is also the patron of the Mummers, continuing the family tradition. Brattlington Hall is the shrine to all things Gilbert and Sullivan, with costumes, old posters, memorabilia and photographs lining every wall. Traditionalist Katisha has kept the estate exactly as it was when her father was alive.

The Mummers are currently preparing for a charity performance of The Pirates of Penzance to celebrate their 100th anniversary. With only three days until curtain, the production has been beset by problems despite its foray into the fantastical world of pirates.

The constant scrutiny of Lady Katisha is adding unnecessary stress. Katisha’s slick private doctor, Dr. Simon Charteris, finally shows up, and he manages to take her mind off of things. Katisha’s production director niece PHYLLIS is understandably upset that Simon has wooed her with his attention.

Phyllis is determined to get the show ready in time for opening night, so she approaches the Mummers’ star performer, the gregarious Pirate King MARCUS DUNLOW, with a request: please block my musical number. Marching across the stage, Marcus uses his sword to tip open the fake treasure chest, where he finds a pair of lifeless eyes staring back at him from beneath the gold coins.

No one on set will admit to knowing the man as BARNABY and WINTER arrive to investigate. Due to the lack of a suspect’s identification and, by extension, a driving motive, the two begin to worry that things won’t go as smoothly as they had hoped. Before the killer can pull off their grand finale, the pressure is on to find the victim and reveal who they are.
