“The Richmond Murder” It was a shocking offence to the British public. A widow was murdered by her own maid in her own house in 1878. This murder pierced the very fabric of Victorian society, tearing at the values of family and social distinctions. Because Kate Webster, at such a young age, not only murdered and dismembered her boss, but also stole her clothes, property, and identity. And that was almost more monstrous than the crime itself, according to Victorian standards.
