Today Saturday 26 November 2022 the show Music, Money, Madness airs an episode called Jimi Hendrix Live in Maui on BBC Two

This documentary recounts Jimi Hendrix’s trip to Maui in July 1970 and the ill-fated independent film Rainbow Bridge, which was made by Hendrix’s manager, Michael Jeffery.

The first time a movie was entirely funded by an album was when Jeffery obtained a $300,000 advance against the promise of a Hendrix soundtrack album. The shoot turned out to be excessive because there was no script and no professional actors. Director Chuck Wein intended to capture The Jimi Hendrix Experience performing on the slope of the dormant Haleakala volcano because they had already been scheduled to perform in Honolulu. Despite the show’s astounding success, Rainbow Bridge did not fare as well.

Interviews with significant performers, including The Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell, Rainbow Bridge director Chuck Wein and actor Michael Hynson, as well as friends of Jimi, like Collette Faron, are included in addition to previously unreleased colour footage of the performance.
