Mystery Road: Origin Episode 5 (ABC TV Friday July 29, 2022)
There’s a break in at the Southwell homestead and Patrick (Daniel Henshall) worries the family is being targeted. At the Southwell’s, Jay (Mark Coles Smith) takes a moment to ask Patrick about Jack’s links to the AbCorp road project. Patrick is shocked to learn about the debt notices, and he reveals Jack had a gambling problem.
At the police station Max (Hayley McElhinney) shows off the video camera she wrestled from one of the Kelly Gang. The camera has vision of the Gang’s exploits but little else. The images spark something in Jay and he revisits the crimes scenes. He realises they all relate to Jardine’s violent colonial history. The Gang are Indigenous and reminding the town of its past.
Off a lead, Jay tails a suspicious miner, Texas (Tristan Gorey), to an abandoned house where he finds Max’s stolen police car. Jay discovers the entrance to a tunnel leading to a hideout in an abandoned hotel. Inside, Jay finds Anya’s teddy bear – he deduces Xavier (Jayden Popik) and Lartesha (Serene Yunupingu) are part of the Gang.
Anousha (Salme Geransar) visits the local newspaper and finds the edition from the day Josh’s body was found. She realises Abe (Toby Leonard Moore) was a police officer and Rex, (George Shetsov) the cabbie, is his father. Going to Abe’s for more information she suddenly finds herself plunged into danger.
Peter accuses Jay of pulling his punches in the hunt for the Kelly Gang because he’s dating Mary (Tuuli Narkle). Jay quits in anger. But he’s drawn back to the Gang’s hideout and finds clues to their next heist.
