Discovering and understanding the neutrino, the tiniest and most enigmatic particle in the universe, has been a herculean effort that has taken scientists almost a century.

Inside the hallowed halls of Fermilab, the world’s premier physics laboratory, a daring experiment is being built to search for a new, enigmatic ‘ghost’ neutrino. If they do, it could completely alter our view of the cosmos and how it was put together. The issue is that it is extremely difficult to detect particles of this size.

Researchers in the field of physics conduct experiments everywhere from dark mine shafts in South Dakota to the vast ice fields of the South Pole. Supersized neutrino detectors plan to use these out-of-the-way locations to learn the secrets of the universe. Could neutrinos debunk the most accurate theory of particle physics ever formulated by humans? Could they provide a connection to the mysterious dark matter that permeates the universe? They are getting closer and closer to the truth at Fermilab.
