What is this episode about
A rainbow of colour, the nine million tulips on Mark Evans’ farm, greets us as the day of celebration in Norfolk and Suffolk begins. He and his crew are getting ready to greet the 14,000 paying customers who will be attending this annual event today.
The 77-foot fishing smack Excelsior is getting ready to set sail from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Once one of the thousands of smacks plying the East Coast, Charlotte Hathaway has had her restored as a sail training ship. The Excelsior makes it through the confined inner harbour and under the swing bridge to the North Sea, where she has been sailing for over a century.
The Windmill in Bircham has another, even older, set of sails. After 160 years of milling corn, Ellie Chalmers, a seventh-generation miller and baker, has opened the mill’s bakery to the general public.
We’ll be visiting the airfield where James Stewart, a Hollywood legend, launched many of his 20 combat missions during World War II. Now that things have calmed down in Tibenham, we’re going to go gliding with 30 members of the Women’s Institute and the Norfolk Gliding Club.
At noon, we play cricket on the stunning grounds of Holkham Hall, the Earl of Leicester’s estate, before stopping for a pint of locally brewed beer in Barnham Thorpe, the watering hole frequented by Admiral Lord Nelson. We travel to Thetford Forest to assist Geoff Scrivens and his crew in setting up two enormous tipis in time for Adam and Lucy’s wedding, which will take place as the sun sets.
