Orange Is The New Black: I Wasn’t Ready (Netflix 11 Jul 2013)

Published

on

In I Wasn’t Ready Piper Chapman begins her prison sentence whilst flashbacks reveal how she ended up there in the first place.

Piper’s crime is actually ten years old and involved acting as a mule for her drug smuggling girlfriend Alex. Despite having left that world behind her and thinking of marriage to boyfriend Larry Piper is still sentence to 15 months in prison.

The opening episode sets out the raison d’être of the series immediately, nudity within the first ten seconds, sex scenes and bad language and multiple flashbacks allowing plenty of back story, at the same time allowing us to meet all the main characters via piper’s own introduction to the prison system. As an extra surprise we (and Piper) discover that Alex is also in the same prison.

Incidentally when Piper’s fiance Larry says “I tell you everything; The web-cam horror, the penis shaving incident…” it’s a nice injoke to the plotlines of his American Pie movie appearances.

Hazell and the Suffolk Ghost

In Hazell and the Suffolk Ghost our intrepid hero pays a visit to the seaside when an accountant, Peter Harlow, calls him in over a cottage he has been left in a will. He has no idea why he has been left the cottage but since he has taken over ownership more than a few strange things have been happening.

Hazell stays at the cottage for a few days and manages to find no small amount of comfort when Harlow’s wife Stephanie turns up (Harlow himself is in New York). Although there is clearly something spooky going on it’s definitely man made and it doesn’t take Hazell too long to work it out.

The episode was a rare outing outside of London for the series, it was filmed in the East Anglian village of Walberswick and surrounds. Although all the interiors were filmed in studio of coure.
