Parental Guidance Season 2 Premieres Monday 5 June on Channel 9

Twelve pairs of Australian parents get together to discuss their parenting styles and compete in a series of challenges designed to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each. The focus parents who tackle the most difficult issue of the digital age are the Honest, Outback, Gentle, and Lighthouse parents. The other parents on the panel will be watching and providing feedback.

Parenting Styles Week One

Parenting style: Gentle

Parents: Larissa (33) and Marcus (34)

The high-energy children of Larissa, a stay-at-home mum, and Marcus, the owner of a lawn mowing business, benefit from their parents’ gentle approach to parenting.

Larissa and Marcus are Christian, and raise their four young children (all under the age of nine) with a sense of calm and kindness. They are confident that their approach to parenting is successful, despite the chaos that reigns in their house, because their children are friendly and affectionate.
When raising children, it’s important to keep things calm and focus on teaching them how to manage their emotions. Instead of trying to control their kids’ every move, Larissa and Marcus let them feel whatever they feel.

While they do provide guidance, they also value their children’s unique perspectives. They encourage conversation by questioning their children’s actions rather than simply telling them what to do. The kids will be part of the decision-making process to encourage autonomy and responsibility. As part of this strategy, we will use rewards, punishments, and praise sparingly.

Larissa and Marcus try to keep their voices low and soothing, preferring to cuddle up with their kids and talk things out rather than raise tensions.

Sammy, a psychology major, and Jason, a business analyst, decided to pack up their lives and move to the beach in the midst of the COVID pandemic.

Sammy and Jason are shining examples of what it means to be exemplary parents. They’re like a lighthouse: always on the lookout, but far enough away to let their kids have a lot of freedom without worrying about them. The parents let the two older kids go swimming at the beach alone while they watched from the balcony. Pepper cycles to school, and the older kids can go to the corner store by themselves if they want to.

Sammy and Jason guide their kids by giving them options, teaching them that their actions have consequences.

Their daily affirmation that “today I will be smart, kind, brave, and strong” encapsulates the family’s core values and provides a motivating framework for the day. The siblings have been taught to look out for one another, which has helped strengthen the family unit.

The children are naturally competitive and athletic despite the emphasis on autonomy and self-direction.
