This concluding episode of Queerstralia, Community and Belonging, examines the struggles of the Queer community for visibility and acceptance, the ways in which communities came together in the face of the AIDS epidemic, the rewards and frustrations of multicultural Queer identity, and the portrayal of the Queer community in media.
It’s the bicentennial. Expo 88. Hawkey is calling your boss a bum as Australia enters the international stage. As the twentieth century draws to a conclusion, Australia presents itself as robust, rich, self-assured, egalitarian, and at peace. But not everyone is invited.
In this episode, we explore the struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community in securing our own position in today’s culture. It records how people banded together to help one another amid the AIDS crisis. History of Coming Out and Same-Sex Marriage are included to show how attitudes toward the LGBTQ community have changed through time. It also discusses the diverse experiences and problems of global Queerdom. It goes all out with the Pink Dollar, floats through 45 years of Mardi Gras, and takes the viewer on a tour of Queer portrayals in Australian cinema and media.
Do Queers even want to enter the mainstream? Zoë Coombs Marr discusses separatism, communes, and travels to Faerieland to visit the Radical Faeries.
