In the fifth season opener of RESTORATION AUSTRALIA on ABC TV Anthony Burke looks at Annette and Michael Pitman’s Quest to Preserve Walter Burley-Griffin’s Castlecrag Vision.

While Canberra is where most people think of when they hear Walter Burley-Griffin’s name, he and his architect wife Marion were more invested in the development of Sydney’s Castlecrag in the 1920s.

Travelling to Castlecrag, Anthony Burke meets ‘Architecture Nerds’ Annette and Michael Pitman. They want to pay tribute to Griffin’s original design for their home by adding on to it in a way that maintains the house’s focus on the outdoors.

It’ll take some serious architectural wizardry, and since the property is located in a high-risk area for fires, they’ll also have to deal with the tension between the heritage office’s concerns and those of fire safety regulators. Will the strain of restoring such a famous home be too much to bear as deadlines slip and costs rise?
