What can we expect from this episode
Tim and Siddy investigate TFL’s massive Acton Works maintenance facility. At the site where hundreds of engineers and maintenance workers are employed, they observe a train going in the wrong direction and visit a World War II bunker that has been repurposed as a model railway club.
Siddy describes the unusual background of the shuttle service that ran between Acton Town and South Acton until the 1960s. The drivers could make two trips on the single carriage train in the time it took to boil a kettle of water, hence the name “tea run.”
Tim gets to handle the 38 stock, which, when it was first constructed at Acton Works, was the most advanced electric train in the world.
Railway historian Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway from the London Transport Museum explore hidden areas of the London Underground that – despite being just feet away from where millions of people regularly travel – hardly anyone knows about.
The pair explore abandoned tunnels, secret bunkers and hidden staircases that have been concealed from public view for years. They will use their unique and privileged access to tell the story of places including London’s most clandestine tube station; the former terminus of the world’s first electric railway; and a station now only accessible by getting a train driver to stop at just the right place, but which played a key role during the Second World War.
