Sid James: Comedy Icon airs Saturday 3 September on Channel 5
With a laugh that was legendary, Sid James had one of the most recognisable faces in Britain film and TV. This 90 minute doco celebrates the nearly 50-year-long career of one of Britain’s most loveable celebrities.
James was the ideal working-man man’s for three post-war decades with his cauliflower face, crinkly, twinkly eyes, nicotine-ravaged voice, dirty chuckle, and famed for his birds, booze, and betting. He appeared in more than a hundred films, rose to fame as Tony Hancock’s side-kick, played a womaniser in a number of TV sitcoms, and was one of the most notable Carry On actors, appearing in 19 of the group’s movies. Long after he passed away, his work and way of life continue to fascinate people, and he still holds a special place in the heart of the nation.
‘He was an actor who had no sell-by date. If he’d have been alive today he’d still be working and making people laugh. He’d make a good landlord of the boozer in EastEnders.’ – Harry Fowler
Airdate: Saturday 3 September 2022 at 8.00pm on Channel 5.
