Space 22 Series Premiere (ABC TV Tuesday 17 May 2022)
Space 22, a joyful, bold new six-part Australian-first documentary series hosted by acclaimed performer and singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, explores the impact art and creativity can have on mental health.
The series follows seven strangers as they participate in an ambitious experiment to see if the simple act of participating in art can help heal invisible wounds.
Many in the group will be experiencing visual and performing arts for the first time, with the help of psychotherapist Noula Diamantopoulos. The hope is that by working together to be creative, they will be able to improve their health and well-being.
Three well-known Australian artists will be joining them in this unique workspace. Abdul Abdulla, a provocative mixed media artist, sets the first challenge to expose the group’s vulnerabilities. Wendy Sharpe, an Archibald Prize winner, offers a new way to express difficult emotions through painting. In the final days of the experiment, legendary performer Eddie Perfect lends his talents to helping participants express their emotions and thoughts through songwriting and singing.
As the programme progresses, the participants begin to share their personal experiences, form connections, and gain new insights into their own problems. A transformational process that connects participants to their own wisdom, allowing for epiphanies and new insights into themselves.
Airdate: Tuesday 17 May 2022 at 8.00pm on ABC TV.
