Steeltown Murders: Final Episode (BBC 1 Monday 5 June 2023)
Steeltown Murders: Final Episode airs Monday 5 June 2023 on BBC 1.
Paul asks Jackie to perform an exhumation because the DNA result is only 75% sure that Kappen is responsible for their deaths. Jackie reluctantly agrees, but she cautions Paul against making any mistakes because of the potential damage to SWP’s image. They need approval from Kappen’s family as well as higher-ups in the organisation and the girls’ families. Paul must also win over his staff, who are under a lot of stress and aren’t exactly on board.
Phil and Geraint go back to Christine to get her stamp of approval and she reveals some new information about Kappen’s sudden departure to Lincoln the day after Sandra Newton was murdered.
While Paul tries to convince home secretary David Blunkett to allow the exhumation, Phil meets with Kappen’s family members, who are opposed to the move. During the press conference for the exhumation, the media seizes on the line of questioning concerning Willoughby and asks Paul why he isn’t eliminating everyone before he can ruin their lives.
While Paul is preoccupied with the excavation, Phil and Geraint decide to handle things on their own. They try to put their final efforts into finding Willoughby without Phil knowing it because they are concerned that he is relying too heavily on one strategy. Kappen’s coffin is removed from his resting place and transported to a nearby mortuary for forensic examination as his family, Sita, the press, and the community look on.
The results are positive, and Kappen’s DNA is confirmed to be a perfect match. Paul pays a final visit to the families as the case nears its conclusion, hoping to help them let go of some of their grief and find peace. Paul and the families have spent years looking for answers, but despite their best efforts, they have been unable to find the peace of mind they were seeking.
