Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out: Lincolnshire (Channel 5 Friday 20 October 2023)

Channel 5

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out: Lincolnshire airs Friday 20 October 2023 on Channel 5.

What is this episode about

Susan visits the stunning rural locations in and around the Lincolnshire Fens as she travels through the second largest county in England. She finds the vast, level Lincolnshire landscape punctuated by yellow popsicle punctuated by lush greens. This might be the ideal location for a pootle.

When Susan visits Woolsthorpe Manor House, the home of Sir Isaac Newton’s family, she learns about this remarkable man and gets to see the exact apple tree that served as the inspiration for the discovery of gravity. Susan can’t help but put the laws of motion to the test for herself. Fortunately, a homemade rocket launcher is present. Although it appears easy to use, Susan finds it to be somewhat confusing.

Lincolnshire, a county known for being flat, makes excellent use of its hills. She meets someone who races soapbox cars in the community’s Coleby Downhill Challenge and discovers that one of them is dressed exactly like a certain small van she knows. She tries using a soapbox for the first time in her “mini-Mirren.” Her knuckles could get this white, she never realised.

She meets Andrew at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, which was constructed over time as a memorial to Fred and Harold Panton’s older brother Christopher, who was shot down and killed during a bombing raid over Nuremberg in March 1944. They purchased a retired Lancaster bomber, which is currently undergoing restoration to its original splendour. A once-in-a-lifetime chance to take a taxi ride down the runway in this iconic piece of British history is presented to Susan.

Susan is given access to the ancient art of illumination at Lincoln Cathedral, where she learns how to use the illuminator’s “skin grease” in the process. The outcome is something beautiful, even though it doesn’t sound particularly elegant.

She assists in Spalding, helping to organise the return of a flower festival in the once-UK tulip capital, and ends in a charming little place in the woods of Lincolnshire, where a proudly 100-year-old cinema still stands. She gets to see the Chaplin classic that was the first film shown here a century ago, complete with live organ music to evoke the very spirit of the silent era. It’s a treat to reminisce about the pleasures of classic films and of watching with her grandmother.
