The Sweeney: Lady Luck (ITV 13 Dec 1976, with Moira Redmond)
In Lady Luck Jack is approached by a woman who has inside knowledge on a betting shop robbery. She claims the man behind the raid is her husband – well respected businessman Edmunds. Regan pulls him in but he has a cast iron alibi. He was having dinner with two well connected friends at the time, along with his wife (however she was in the kitchen cooking).
There is a small window that could break his alibi, when Edmunds was tracking down an errant bottle of wine from his cellar, that he could conceivably have had time to do the raid but proving it is another matter.
An interesting episode, nobody but Regan actually believes Edmunds is innocent. He also sleeps with Edmund’s wife Marcia just to complicate the issue further. However a casual conversation about Edmund’s motorcycle skills does give Jack the breakthrough he needs.
The TV Times of the week (11 Dec 76) had a nice feature and interview with main guest star Moira Redmond, this touched upon her early career as a dancer at the Windmill Theatre and being directed in I Claudius by ex-husband Herbert Wise. On a serious note the interview also touched upon her inability to have children.
classic quote
“You spend months slouching around, drinking with social vermin, mortgaging your liver for a Pension. But everynow and then I feel I really deserve it when something nice, clean and unexpected lands in me lap.”
