The Big Painting Challenge

The Big Painting Challenge airs a new episode tonight Friday 31 March 2023 on BBC Two.

“Still Life” Reverend Richard Coles and Mariella Frostrup have been studying Pollocks and Rembrandts in preparation for The Big Painting Challenge. Ten aspiring artists travel to Glasgow to begin a rigorous six-week painting programme. Each participant brings boundless energy and promise. Mentors Diana Ali and Pascal Anson are working professionals who will be both teaching and testing the students.

The artists begin with still life, and they are tasked with painting items they have taken from home. Can they successfully depict a 3D item on a 2D surface? After that, there will be a masterclass, an in-depth lesson planned to aid both professional artists and amateurs at home who are working to better their volume and tone in their own paintings.

The next test will be a monumental still life. Artists at a distillery have to capture the big, gleaming stills and fermenters used to make spirits like whisky and gin. When they are finished, the public gets to see their work and vote for their best artist to move on. Then, Lachlan Goudie and Daphne Todd give their opinions on the amateurs’ performances and determine who will be eliminated.

Airdate: Friday 31 March 2023 at 2.45pm on BBC Two.
