The Brothers: An Impossible Debt (BBC-1 31 Mar 1974 with Gillian McCutcheon)
In An Impossible Debt Hammond’s are finally able to pay back Jill much to the pleasure of David. Mary Hammond has given Barbara the money to pay off Johnny’s debts and once Jennifer finds out there is an almighty row that threatens to split apart the very structure of the company. Meanwhile Ann is on the verge of a breakdown over her feelings for Nicholas Fox, she tries to persuade her doctor to prescribe some sleeping tablets or anti depressents but when Nicholas returns home early from a business trip to Brussels she spends the day with him…
A strange episode really, full of moments where people gaze moodily into the distance but you can see that things are ramping up for the season three finale as Jennifer starts to lose her cool big time and by the end of the episode is telling Edward he can have her shares as she’s quitting the company!! Ann is having a tough old time of it too and it’s interesting to see the dynamic switch between Ann and her new confidante Pamela Graham, who of course was getting quite close to Brian through much of season two.
