What is this episode about

Duchess of Northumberland Jane Percy graciously shows us around her magnificent mansion. Alnwick Castle, built in the 11th century and designated as a Grade I historic site, is as formidable a figure as Her Grace, The Duchess, and its 12-acre garden is a fitting complement. Jane is known for taking on bold endeavours, and now she’s taking on her most ambitious yet: a massive, fantasy-themed kingdom she’s calling Lilidorei, which is intended for children and adults alike.

The series chronicles the two-year construction of the Lilidorei and the wonderful people who keep Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden running smoothly, from ground-breaking to opening day.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II is reported. The Duchess, in her role as Lord Lieutenant, is tasked with proclaiming the new King in accordance with ancient tradition. Keeping with the theme of primogeniture, the Duchess is cleaning the castle from top to bottom in preparation for her eldest son to become Duke. She just finished her most recent renovation, which involved spending over £60,000 on a new hand-woven stair carpet. We also get a glimpse of head butler Jan’s personal life behind the scenes; it turns out he’s just as meticulous about setting the table at home as he is when he cooks for his partner Brett.

On Alnwick Street, where many of the castle’s employees live, the new household controller, Andrew, is warmly welcomed. Fourteen technicians return to Lilidorei and spend the next three months building the largest playground structure in the world.

Meanwhile, the Lilidorei crew is let down by their Christmas tree supplier and has to rush to Holland to bring back 700 trees. As she prepares her favourite meal, beans on toast, and discusses her experiences as the first non-aristocratic Duchess of Northumberland, we get a glimpse into the Duchess’s life.
