The Greatest TV: of the ’70s airs Saturday 28 October 2023 on Channel 5

What can we expect from this episode

Fabulous comedians like Tommy Cooper, Morecambe and Wise, and The Two Ronnies, as well as iconic sitcoms like Fawlty Towers, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, and The Good Life, are featured in this two-hour retrospective. From the classical I Claudius to the contemporary Abigail’s Party, via the gritty police drama The Sweeney, we recall the finest dramas.

The Generation Game and Sale of the Century gave us some truly spectacular game shows, and the tense aborted Apollo 13 moon mission (especially the capsule’s re-entry) captured the attention of the entire world. We look back at the prime of That’s Life, the pinnacle of children’s television, the pinnacle of soap opera, and the legendary performance by Abba at Eurovision in 1974. They may have triumphed, but they earned no points in Britain.

Many famous people recall their experiences on these shows or their enjoyment of them as viewers. Chris Tarrant spills the beans on the competition between Tiswas and BBC’s Saturday Superstore, among other behind-the-scenes anecdotes. William Roache explains how he came up with his legendary plots for Coronation Street in the ’70s.

Christopher Biggins recalls the thrill of filming I Claudius, and many other members of the production team are here to spill the beans on how these magnificent productions came to be. Jimmy Tarbuck, John Thomson, Cheryl Baker, Sheila Ferguson, Tony Blackburn, Anne Diamond, Michael Buerk, John Sargeant, Debbie McGee, Sherrie Hewson, and Trudie Goodwin are just some of interviewees.

Over three two-hour episodes, this series looks at the greatest TV of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Featuring classic archive, interviews with those involved in making these amazing TV shows, behind-the-scenes stories and pictures, and tributes from celebrity fans, Greatest TV looks at all genres – from soaps to sitcom, kids shows to music programming, stand-out dramas to epic live TV events.
