The Guardians: The Nature of the Beast (ITV 11 Sep 1971, with Anthony Bate)

In The Nature of the Beast Clare and Tom Weston are on the run, with Tom having escaped from the ‘rehab centre’, he is also dangerous addicted to the drugs he was being fed whilst in the rehab centre. Tom is also still determined to go through with his plan of blowing up a major Guardians HQ, convinced that by doing so he will prove his worth to the communists. Clare is very disturbed and contacts Benedict. He, however, is more concerned by the fact that she knows he is a Quarmby.

Benedict is further surprised when another Quarmby (played by the always excellent Anthony Bate) pays him a visit. He turns out not to be either a Quarmby or a G but is a communist looking for Weston.

The episode follows on immediately following the events of episode 8, it would have had much more impact to the series as a whole if this had been episode 9 instead of 10. Writer Jonathan Hales makes a cameo appearance.
