The Lakes With Paul Rose Episode 3 airs Fri 2 Nov on BBC-2

In this week’s programme, adventurer and Lake District resident Paul Rose explores Coniston and follows in the footsteps of the people who’ve made this corner of the Lakes one of its great centres of adventure.

Coniston Water isn’t the biggest of Cumbria’s Lakes – but it’s one of the most iconic. It’s here that Donald Campbell lost his life trying to break the world water speed record.

Paul meets Campbell’s daughter Gina and crew member Robbie Robinson, who was there on the fateful day in January 1967 when Bluebird crashed on the lake.

Paul gets his own adrenalin levels racing by entering a Lakeland bike ride with a difference – all the way to Coniston on a penny farthing. He also joins the modern day adventurers who are putting their bodies on the line in pursuit of their dreams, including mountain bikers in Grizedale Forest and climbers on Dow Cragg, one of the Lakes’ most notorious peaks.

The programme ends with Paul having a crack at reaching the summit of The Old Man of Coniston.
