The Looming Tower Episode 9 airs Fri 21 Jun on BBC Two

Late summer 2001. The CIA knows that the Saudi minder keeping tabs on Khalid al-Mihdhar (Tawfeek Barhom) and Nawaf al-Hazmi (Nebras Jamali) has lost track of them.

Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt) is in a quandary: how best can she feed knowledge of their presence in America to the FBI without incriminating herself in covering it up for months?

At the 2004 Congressional Joint Enquiry into 9/11 former CIA chief George Tenet (Alec Baldwin) and Condoleezza Rice (Eisa Davis) are grilled on who knew what, and when.

Security advisor Richard Clarke (Michael Stuhlbarg) has been sidelined. He and John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels) discuss who should take the White House role instead. Leaving the FBI, O’Neill is hoping for financial reward elsewhere – a job at the World Trade Centre for example.

Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim), called to the office after O’Neill’s leaving party, is ordered back to Yemen, told to chase up all al-Qaeda links and smooth things with the authorities, including Ambassador Barbara Bodine (Jennifer Ehle). Can Sofan finally gain the aid of General Qamish (Ali Suliman) in getting to interrogate Abu Jandal?

Mohamed Atta (Dhafer L’Abidine) unites various al-Qaeda cell members in Las Vegas for a decadent weekend. Soon enough they are to go into action.

Airdate: Friday 21 June 2019 from 9.30pm-10.15pm on BBC TWO.
