One of Northern Ireland’s most stunning areas is the Ards peninsula. This area is the cultural and linguistic centre of the Ulster Scots, where generations of families have maintained strong ties to the land and sea.
In this series, we follow a small group of district and community nurses as they provide care for residents across the peninsula, allowing them to remain in the comfort of their own homes among family and friends. The trusting relationships that nurses cultivate with their patients are just as valuable as the professional medical care they provide.
Portaferry patient Kirsty has started chemotherapy. Tanya, a nurse, visits Kirsty at her house to take blood samples and check on her health rather than having her travel back and forth to the hospital, where she runs the risk of contracting an infection.
Rea, an elderly patient, and his wife Ruth reside in a residential home with beautiful ocean views, where nurse Gemma keeps a close eye on him. Gemma’s company and companionship are a great tonic for Ruth and Rea, who both suffer from dementia and diabetes.
