What is this episode about

Prince Charles is about to take the first step towards his ultimate goal of becoming King of England by being crowned Prince of Wales. However, the path is fraught with danger, as Welsh Nationalists have planted bombs. There was a fuel crisis, strikes, and inflation in 1970s Britain. This is the setting in which the Queen must prepare her son for the role of future monarch. But Prince Charles is no exception to the royal family’s age-old conundrum of choosing between love and duty.

When Prince Charles pays a visit to his great uncle Edward VIII in Paris, he finds a man who has never recovered from his decision to abdicate the throne for love. His servants are still dressed as Buckingham Palace footmen, and his red dispatch box is still labelled “The King.”

Prince Charles falls in love with Camilla Shand, but she is deemed unsuitable for a royal marriage, so he decides to join the navy instead of following his heart. Andrew Parker-Bowles, the boyfriend of Princess Anne, is too wild for the royal family, so Anne is forced to give him up and he marries Camilla instead.

The Queen and her sister Princess Margaret have a complicated relationship, complicated by the tension between love and duty. When Margaret’s marriage begins to fail, she begins an affair with gardener Roddy Llewellyn, putting the monarchy in jeopardy.

The untold story of the world’s most famous family, including all of their triumphs and tragedies.

The story is told from the point of view of the major personal challenges that The Queen and the monarchy faced throughout her reign, and it features interviews with key figures who have firsthand accounts as well as rarely seen footage.

The series juxtaposes previously unseen archival footage with candid new interviews with eyewitnesses, some of whom have never been on camera before. Watching this, viewers will see the images broadcast around the world during pivotal moments in history, while also learning the backstory and gaining unique insight into The Queen’s personal experience of navigating the events that shaped the fortunes of her family and the history of the United Kingdom.
