The Repair Shop: Episode 42 (S2022EP42 BBC One Friday 28 October 2022)
Three treasured family heirlooms are revived by Jay Blades and the team, bringing back the memories associated with them.
Paul O’Neil and his daughter Victoria from Cambridgeshire are the first people to show up at the barn. They are hoping that Pete Woods, an expert in musical instruments, can restore the sound of a family heirloom. Paul’s mother, Veronica O’Neil, was a professional saxophonist, and she was the owner of the silver tenor saxophone. In the 1930s and 1940s, she performed all over the world and was well-respected in the music business. Paul and his family treasure not only the sax but also the tattered leather case it came in. When Paul’s parents were getting ready to say goodbye at train stations, they spent a lot of time courting each other while sitting on the case. Victoria is a talented saxophonist who aspires to play her grandmother’s prized possession—if Pete can revive the tarnished, dented treasure. In order to fix the case, he consults leather expert Suzie Fletcher, and the two of them perform wonders.
Matt Nickels, a specialist in stained glass, is pleased to meet Anne and Bob Bright, who have brought in a panel that portrays the Blackpool Tower in gorgeous coloured glass but is severely damaged. One of two items that belonged to Anne’s “grandpop,” who loved Blackpool and dancing with Anne’s grandmother in the Tower Ballroom, it is over six feet high. The distinctive stained-glass panels were made to order in the 1950s, but they have since been through several wars. They were damaged twice: once during a break-in at Pop’s house, and again decades later, while being stored for safekeeping in Anne and Bob’s garage. Bob also backed over one of the panels by mistake, which had disastrous effects. In order to give it back to Anne and Bob, who are eager to proudly display it as a reminder of Pop and his dancing days, Matt must reconstruct significant portions of the missing design by locating new coloured glass and leading substantial areas.
When Tina Brine shows up with her late mother’s music box, which is shaped like a tiny wooden piano, music box maestro Steve Kember steps in to save the day. For as long as Tina can recall, it was on her mother’s vanity. When her mother passed away, she was left the tiny piano, which had fascinated her as a child. The grand piano, in which the mechanism is located, is broken and scratched, and it no longer plays. Tina would adore to hear it play once more and show her daughter how charming it is.
