The Repair Shop: Episode 46 (S2022EP46 BBC One Thursday 3 November 2022)
Three family heirlooms are revived by Jay Blades and the team, bringing back the memories they contain.
Clint Yallop is the first person to enter the barn. He brought in his grandfather’s notebook, which urgently needs Chris Shaw’s bookbinding expertise. George Yallop, Clint’s grandfather, meticulously recorded his research and experiments in notebooks like this while working as a pathology technician at the Royal London Hospital in the early 1900s. This one is unfortunately the last, which makes it even more special to Clint. He recalls his grandfather as a fascinating man who was always friendly and hospitable. Clint wants to use the scientific notebook for his own horticulture studies, but the thin book is falling apart. Chris is enthralled by the tiny notebook and plunges headfirst into the unusual restoration task.
Matt Goddard is the next person to arrive at the barn, and he is hoping that woodsman Will Kirk can finish a labour of love that is unfinished. Although Matt has good intentions, he is aware that the intricate construction is beyond him because his father passed away before he could complete this model of a merchant trading ship. It has been decades since the nautical build was abandoned, but Matt and his siblings believe that now is the right time to complete what their father began and pass it down to the next generation so that they can all be reminded of his love of all things nautical. Will focuses on the complex wooden structure while Amanda uses ropes to assist with the sails.
Sarah Kershaw, the barn’s final guest for the day, is greeted by goldsmith Richard Talman. Sarah brought Brenda’s tiny silver locket into the room. Her husband, Sarah’s father, gave it to her as an engagement gift in the 1960s, but it has since broken and become unwearable. It did contain some adorable images of the couple, but one of them—along with the heart-shaped frame that kept it in place—is now missing. A few years ago, they lost Sarah’s father, and Sarah is aware that her mother would dearly love to wear the locket once more as a constant reminder of her devoted husband. Richard gets to work repairing the severe tarnishing and creating new parts so Brenda can use it once more.

Season 2022 Episode 46
The Repair Shop is a workshop of dreams, where broken or damaged cherished family heirlooms are brought back to life.
Furniture restorers, horologists, metal workers, ceramicists, upholsterers and all manner of skilled craftsmen and women have been brought together to work in one extraordinary space, restoring much-loved possessions to their former glory.
Many of these items have incredible stories behind them and a unique place in history: from an accordion played in the Blitz by a woman who is now in her 90s, to a beautifully crafted clock made by a father who was completely blind; a Pinball machine that is currently being used as a kitchen counter, and a Davenport desk with its trademark fake drawers which fooled burglars – and their crowbar.
The Repair Shop is an antidote to our throwaway culture and shines a light on the wonderful treasures to be found in homes across the country.
