The Repair Shop: Episode 48 (S2022EP48 BBC One Monday 7 November 2022)
Three priceless items are revived by Jay Blades and the team, igniting the memories they contain.
Chris Marshall, a Dorset native, enters the barn first. Regarding his father’s Royal Australian Air Force cap from the Second World War, he has come to see master hatter Jayesh Vaghela. Robert Marshall carried out an impressive 38 operations while occupying the dangerous position of rear gunner on the Lancaster bombers. He was assigned to Britain during the Second World War, where he met and wed Chris’s mother. He went back to his native Australia after the war was over and stayed there the rest of his life. Chris only had a few brief encounters with his father, but he recalls a modest, gracious man. To honour his father’s bravery and to one day pass it on to his grandson, he would like to have the misshaped, faded cap restored.
David Burville, a mechanical master, is also present to greet Julia Ford, who has brought a special toy from her youth. A sprung base should be attached to the jointed, wooden giraffe so that it can move and bend when the spring is compressed or released. But now that the strings have broken, the elderly giraffe is frightened to move. Uncle Joe, who is now in his late nineties, gave him to Julia as a child. She is aware that seeing the giraffe standing up again would brighten his day.
Tracy Marriot lastly hopes that Brenton West, the resident silversmith, can fix her late mother’s silver cup. On the silver jubilee of King George V, her mother Georgina was born in 1935. All newborns born on that special day received commemorative cups similar to these. The limited-edition gift that Tracy’s mother received has seen better days, and Tracy is aware of how disappointed Georgina would have been to see it in such a condition. With the help of his reliable hammers and polish, Brenton conducts his research and replaces the missing sections.

Season 2022 Episode 48
The Repair Shop is a workshop of dreams, where broken or damaged cherished family heirlooms are brought back to life.
Furniture restorers, horologists, metal workers, ceramicists, upholsterers and all manner of skilled craftsmen and women have been brought together to work in one extraordinary space, restoring much-loved possessions to their former glory.
Many of these items have incredible stories behind them and a unique place in history: from an accordion played in the Blitz by a woman who is now in her 90s, to a beautifully crafted clock made by a father who was completely blind; a Pinball machine that is currently being used as a kitchen counter, and a Davenport desk with its trademark fake drawers which fooled burglars – and their crowbar.
The Repair Shop is an antidote to our throwaway culture and shines a light on the wonderful treasures to be found in homes across the country.
