The Repair Shop: Episode 49 (S2022EP49 BBC One Tuesday 8 November 2022)
Three priceless heirlooms are given new life by Jay Blades and the team, bringing back wonderful memories along with the possessions.
Emma Brookes and her mother Rosemary enter the barn first, each bearing a remarkable tale of resistance during the war. They have brought the homemade radio that Rosemary’s father used when the Nazis occupied Jersey in the Second World War. The Nazis confiscated every radio on the island in an effort to control information flow, and anyone found using one faced severe punishment. Undaunted, Rosemary’s father stowed his device under the floorboards, taking it out every day to listen to the BBC news. Then he would publish a news item on his club’s noticeboard. He did it as a way to oppose the Germans and contribute to the war effort. An old polish tin, curtain hooks, and other materials he had on hand were used to make the radio. Mark Stuckey, an electronics expert, faces a challenging task in getting it back in working order.
Joanna Carpenter is the next to arrive, carrying a set of dinner gongs that were originally from her grandmother’s farm. Joanna has happy memories of spending time with her grandmother, watching her feed and milk the cows, making butter, and playing the piano. She also recalls playing with them as a young child during dinnertime. Sadly, the gongs Joanna’s grandmother left for her when she passed away no longer produce the same sound. Pete Woods, a specialist in musical instruments, must take the initiative to bring these endearing items back to life.
The last visitor of the day is Chloe Foster from Hampshire, who is carrying a musical carousel that her mother gave to her. With cerebral palsy, Chloe spent a lot of her childhood in and out of the hospital. The carousel was purchased by Chloe’s mother as a diversion during her lengthy hospital visits. Chloe would play with it endlessly, but it hasn’t worked in about five years, and one of the horses has completely broken off. Now that Chloe is an adult, she is thinking about getting her own place and leaving the family home, and she would like to be able to display the working carousel.

Season 2022 Episode 49
The Repair Shop is a workshop of dreams, where broken or damaged cherished family heirlooms are brought back to life.
Furniture restorers, horologists, metal workers, ceramicists, upholsterers and all manner of skilled craftsmen and women have been brought together to work in one extraordinary space, restoring much-loved possessions to their former glory.
Many of these items have incredible stories behind them and a unique place in history: from an accordion played in the Blitz by a woman who is now in her 90s, to a beautifully crafted clock made by a father who was completely blind; a Pinball machine that is currently being used as a kitchen counter, and a Davenport desk with its trademark fake drawers which fooled burglars – and their crowbar.
The Repair Shop is an antidote to our throwaway culture and shines a light on the wonderful treasures to be found in homes across the country.
