The Royals: A History Of Scandals airs a new episode tonight Monday 30 January 2023 on More 4.
“Wealth and Opulence” British kings have been at the centre of scandals throughout history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Some royal scandals may be familiar to you, but Professor Suzannah Lipscomb investigates the roles of the press, parliament, and the public in creating anger and spreading rumours across the ages.
With the help of other historians and experts she meets at the historic houses and palaces where some of these tumultuous happenings took place, Suzannah learns the truths behind the scandals and the impact they had on the lives and fortunes of those involved, as well as on British society as a whole.
In this opening episode, Suzannah reveals the controversies that resulted from excessive royal spending, from Henry VIII’s Field of Cloth of Gold through George IV’s tremendous debt. Additionally, Suzannah learns the woman of a mediaeval commoner who rose to become one of Britain’s wealthiest women. Drs. Laura Tompkins, Alexandra Loske, and Professor Matthew McCormack are decoding these tales with Suzannah.
