The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe Australia Premiere Thurs 18 Aug on BBC First

In August, BBC First will air the recent excellent four British drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, starring Monica Dolan, Eddie Marsan, and Mark Stanley.

The bizarre true story of Hartlepool residents John and Anne Darwin, who went to great lengths to escape their unfathomable debt, is explored in the book The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe.

The extraordinary real-life story made news headlines in the UK, firstly when John went missing while canoeing off the coast and later when it was revealed that, with the help of his wife, he had faked his own death to claim life insurance and avoid bankruptcy. The series is inspired by a memoir written by journalist David Leigh who was the first journalist to track down Anne as she was on the verge of setting up a new life in Panama.

The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe Premieres Thursday 18 August 2022 at 8.30pm on BBC First and Binge.
