The Wednesday Play: The Navigators (BBC Drama, George Baker)

In The Wednesday Play entry The Navigators Alicia (Andree Melly) and her mother Enid (Patience Collier) become involved with two burly navvies who are working close to their home. The older man Fatty (Richard Pearson) thinks he is deadly to the opposite sex and is determined to prove it to Enid.

Reviewing the drama in The Stage (28 Jan 1965) Bill Edmund felt that Julia Jones script had potential but the humour was downplayed by both director Vivian Matalon and the cast. In the end though he “ended up disliking all the characters as they went back to their deservedly stodgy daily round.”

The Navigators was a late replacement for the planned transmission of John Hopkin’s drama Fable (a clever parable about apartheid). Fable was pushed back a week because it would have aired the day before the Leyton by-election.
