What is this episode about

Two world wars, the fall of empires, coronations, weddings, glittering tours, fashion and scandals: the British royal family was at the centre of it all in the 20th century. This four-part documentary series follows official tours and state visits, uncovering stories from far-flung places, glimpses into the lives of those born of royal blood, and exploring the history of the symbolic locations on the royal touring map.

The joy and hope of a post-war world are vividly depicted in this premiere episode. However, the world has not fully recovered from the trauma of two world wars and the subsequent remapping of many countries. The programme delves into the royal family’s wartime activities, from Elizabeth’s first solo public engagement in April 1943 to the massive tour of the Commonwealth that marked the coronation of the new queen in 1953 and 1954.
