Everest was the focus of numerous military-style expeditions launched by world superpowers in the decades between the 1920s and the 1960s. Imperial Britain, Nazi Germany, and Superpower America all played a great game while filming it.

From Mallory and Irvine’s deaths on Everest in 1924 to Hillary and Tensing’s final ascent of the mountain in 1953, all of Himalayan mountaineering’s most iconic, epic, and tragic moments have been preserved on film. This is the story of how British filmmakers used never-before-seen footage to make the great peaks into great propaganda.
