UK / ITV – Granada / 1×60 minute episode / Broadcast 16 July 1974 @ 9.00pm
Writer: Jack Rosenthal / Music: Derek Hilton / Production Design: Colin Rees / Producer: Michael Dunlop / Director: June Howson
Local councillor Mr Ellis is in charge of monitering the ballot papers on polling day, he has been doing it for years and is growing rather tired of it all, first-timer though Mr Martin has memorised every single rule in the book and is determined to be the best polling officer there has ever been.
Meanwhile Miss Robinson, who is helping out and has a crush on Mr Martin, has her eyes opened to a few ways of the world. Every year Mr Ellis is invited to a party at the Mayor’s house and every year he doesn’t go, much to the chagrin of Mrs Ellis, this year he might just surprise everyone.
Lots of nicely smart dialogue as is the norm with the masterly Rosenthal and lots of familiar faces popping up throughout, including a beardy Richard Griffiths, Michael Angelis, Bernard Hill as the copper on duty at the hall and even Liz Dawn as the last voter of the day. It’s your classic play structure with 95% of the drama taking place in the hall itself.
