What can we expect from this episode

In the final episode of this run of episodes Craig Reucassel investigates the ecological effects of fast fashion. He encounters fashion waste heroes who are fighting to save discarded garments and goes undercover to learn the fate of our recycled clothing.

Trying to figure out why Americans buy so much cheap clothing and then discard it so quickly, he plans to interview a “fast fashion” influencer. Can he persuade us all to reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in landfill by wearing it for longer and appreciating it more?

In his quest to prevent discarded clothing from joining the landfill, he’ll cross paths with “waste warriors.” In Melbourne, he stops by Second Stitch, a nonprofit that promotes clothing repair to lengthen the items’ useful lives. Thread Together is a Sydney-based charity that redistributes new, donated clothing to people in need after receiving them from retailers.

Craig also takes an undercover mission to uncover the true destination of some of our recycled clothing. What percentage of materials are collected for recycling versus what ultimately becomes trash?

Craig meets with Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to discuss the nation’s garbage problem and whether or not politicians are doing enough to fix it. Is there room for increased spending on recycling facilities and stricter regulations of wasteful business practises in Australia?

Our waste is growing at double the rate of our population with 52 mega tonnes generated a year. Australia is ranked 5th highest for generating the most municipal waste in the world. In this three-part series, Craig Reucassel is on a mission to see if we, as a nation, can all do a little bit better.
