What is this episode about

A group of Nigerian orphans raised by white families in the 1970s share the emotional toll of their upbringing.

‘Farming’ refers to the fostering of over 70,000 West African children by white Britons between 1955 and 1995. Many of these people were then forced to deal with the lingering effects of this contentious government policy, often in silence.

Nine people with this upbringing were invited to a workshop retreat to talk about it, with the help of experts. They each take turns reflecting on their childhoods, exposing the chaos and trauma of growing up in the midst of rapid change. It’s the first time many of them have met others who can relate to their upbringing in the same way they can.

White Nanny, Black Child, is a deeply personal reflection on race, family, and belonging.
