Within These Walls: A Way of Loving (ITV 9 Oct 1976, with Caroline Hutchison)

In A Way of Loving things are being stolen from the kitchen. Second chef Ron Morseby has become somewhat infatuated with one of the inmates, Tina Price, and he is taking stuff from the stores to give to her. At first Tina is somewhat amused by Moresby’s attention, after all he is not quite in the Paul Newman stakes when it comes to looks. However Moresby turns out be quite the seedy creep, especially when we see him at his dingy flat which is papered with nudes cut out from magazines. Things take a disturbing turn when Morseby persuades Tina to go into the stores with him, on the promise of three packets of cigarette he talks her into stripping for him. She does but when he tries to take matters further she rejects him quite forcibly.

Meanwhile Officer Parsons has discovered what is going on, Helen Forrester decides that a warning may be appropriate in this instance and Moresby is given a major dressing down. That evening Moresby goes home and commits suicide.

There is a funny little subplot too about an older inmate, Mrs Spooner, faking an injury to get into the hospital wing.

The episode was shown at the later time of 11.00pm because of a live boxing match (airing at 9.45pm) which saw John Conteh successfully defend his world light heavyweight crown against Alvaro Lopez.
