Within These Walls: Arrivals, Departures (ITV 28 Jan 1978, with Louise Hall-Taylor)

Within These Walls Title Generic

In Arrivals, Departures Mrs Armitage’s husband Ted is still very much alive and so is Mrs Weeks despite the fact that the fourth season closed out with what appeared to be the final moments of them both (although to be fair it was all left fairly ambiguous). Georgie has been told that if she drinks again she will die. When she leaves hospital she is put on Martha Parrish’s wing, sharing a cell with a young woman, Carol, who is only 25 but is already on the same path to alcoholism that Georgina has spent years on.

When Liz Clarke interviews Carol she is disturbed to hear her story. Carol claims to have been in thrall to a dangerous man called Peter and between them carried out a series of muggings and attacks on old men and tramps leading to the death of two of them. The question is whether she is just spinning a story or whether she is telling the truth.

Knowing that Carol is suffering badly from not being able to have a drink Georgina rather stupidly steals some communion wine for her. It doesn’t end well Carol drinks all of the wine, attacks Georgie and goes on something of a rampage. Dr Mayes realises the seriousness of Carol’s drinking problems and he also calls the CID in over the story Carol told to Miss Clarke. It turns out the story is in fact true!

There is a promotion amongst the officers in the offing and Mrs Armitage thinks Prison Officer Spencer is the perfect candidate. However there are a number of other candidates including former prison officer Mrs Phillips with whom Mrs Arnitage gas had several run ins.

Meanwhile Peter and Liz realise that their relationship is pretty much over, not that it ever really amounted to much anyway. In fact Liz seems rather too relieved once the decision is made.

Finally though there is some kind of happy ending again for Georgina Weeks who is reunited once again with her friend Mrs Dobing who agrees once more to take her in. Liz had believed that Mrs Dobing was in Norfolk caring for her sick sister but she was in fact back in London living by herself and very lonely.

Apparently this was the episode that Katharine Blake was filming when she fell ill and had to be replaced by Sarah Lawson. There was need to re-shoot some scenes and Lala Lloyd was brought in as interviewer Mrs Ross in place of originally cast Daphne Oxenford.
