Within These Walls: The Line of Duty (ITV 25 Sep 1976, with Tony Steedman)

Within These Walls

In The Line of Duty, the uniformed staff are none too pleased about the workload they face everyday and when they feel they are being undervalued by new governor Helen Forrester they decide to go on strike. Meanwhile inmate Babs Ryan is causing trouble.

So far Helen Forrester is proving to be a bit hit and miss, she is managing to pretty much antagonise everybody on the staff. Liz Clarke is convinced she is trying to compartmentalise everybody and in the process is driving wedges between them. Peter Mayes thinks at least he knows where he stands with her.

This season so far the episodes have focused solely on life at Stone Park but there is a rare glimpse beyond the prison walls when Dr Mayes attends a conference, it’s mainly so that we can get a bit of background on Helen’s former life. Mayes runs into an old friend of Helen’s husband who reveals that he was a major alcoholic and the fact that he killed himself (although the verdict was accidental death).

Charles Radley is the one who seems to be having most trouble adapting to the law of Forrester. When Dr Mayes hints at the fact that she is more than likely extremely lonely, having moved to a new area by herself and where she knows nobody, Charles pays Helen a visit at home and the visit does end up thawing the ice between them somewhat.
