In Debate Joanna Roberts spends much of her time causing as much trouble as possible for all concerned. She considers it to be her job when she is in prison (and she is in prison a lot). Most of the deputy governors think enough is enough and she should be given harsher punishments but Faye thinks they need to come up with a different solution.
Martha Parrish is convinced that Joanna needs to get her self respect back, but how to manage that is the question. Meanwhile another prisoner, Angela, serving a life sentence, has been in solitary and is pretty much monosyllabic but Faye thinks putting her into a cell with Jo Roberts would be perfect for both of them.
Pairing them together seems to be working, and the pair become friends, Joanna quietening down in the process and Angela coming out of her shell too. But when the inmates get permission to hold a debate, a chance remark from Faye makes Joanna realise she is being played. Joanna then tries to ruin the debate but isn’t able to.
“If somebody showed you a picture of yourself you couldn’t recognise it.”
