In Guessing Game, Anne French, a young inmate on Janet Harker’s wing gives Faye food for thought. She is sharing a cell with Rowena Patterson who has developed a really strong attachment to Anne. Anne seems to be something of a trouble maker despite being excessively nice to everyone, she also seems to be given to romancing where the truth is concerned. She has told Rowena that when her sentence is over she can move into her parents’ house in the country with them – the problem is Anne has no parents and no house in the country.

Faye thinks a recent conversation she had with an old friend, an ex-magistrate, may well have some truth in it. He, George, is adamant that it is almost impossible to get to know female prisoners and that they find it all too easy to live a kind of fantasy life.

The lovely Angharad Rees takes centre stage as Anne French but Rosalind Ayres takes the acting honours as her cellmate Rowena. She is the one who really suffers at the hands of Anne’s lying.
