A New Life in the Sun

World’s Most Secret Hotels airs a new episode tonight Sunday 5 February 2023 on Channel 4.

“Episode 2” This series explores some of the world’s most off-the-beaten-path lodging options, from underwater resorts and desert lodges to cliffside homes and treetop cabins.

From a desert resort that looks like a Mars colony to a hotel in the skies, this episode visits some of the most eccentric hotels in Jordan, England, Sweden, and Ecuador.

At Jordan’s Bubble Wadi Rum Luxotel resort, we experience what it’s like to sleep under the stars in the middle of the desert in a series of transparent ‘bubble’ tents that appear more like a cluster of space spacecraft on Mars than luxurious desert accommodation.

We take a trip to Norfolk, England to see the peculiar Cley Windmill, which has stood there for almost two centuries. It’s a building that few people recognise as a 10-room luxury hotel frequented by tourists and international celebrities.

Sweden is home to the world’s first 747 hotel, the Jumbo Stay. In 2009, the world’s largest passenger airliner began its second life as a 32-room hotel. The inside has been redesigned to accommodate dining and sleeping, so guests can play pilot for the evening, rest easy in the cockpit suite, or stretch their wings.

There is a hotel in South America that is so far out in the middle of nowhere that they only get deliveries of food and other necessities once every three weeks. The Mashpi Lodge is located 1200 metres above sea level in a cloud forest, surrounded by 17,000 hectares of rainforest. We learn that protecting the hotel’s special environment was a major logistical challenge throughout construction.

Airdate: Sunday 5 February 2023 at 6.45pm on Channel 4.
