Classic Quotes: Samuel Goldwyn – Gentlemen, kindly include me out

The Line: ‘Gentlemen, kindly include me out.’
Who Said It: Samuel Goldwyn

The Setup: The tyrannical studio boss, known for such Goldwynisms as: ‘I’ll give you a definitive maybe’ and ‘It’s more than magnificent–it’s mediocre,’ distanced himself from his peers at a 1933 meeting of the Association of Motion Picture Producers.

The Payoff: Goldwyn was the last of the great Hollywood moguls, a one-man studio who didn’t like to share credit, responsibility or profits. He operated on nerve, shrewdness and energy, and he maintained his independence for almost half a century. H.L. Mencken once said, ‘No one ever went broke underestimating the American public’; Samuel Goldwyn got rich underestimating it. He also left a dictionary-be-damned language legacy that even Yogi Berra would envy.
