Apocalypse Wow | Interview with Chris Hughes

Tell us about Apocalypse Wow. What’s the premise of the show? What can viewers expect from the series?

I think it’s just great television. We were in the unknown as well. It’s not something that’s been on TV before. We didn’t really know what to expect. It was set in this Torture Dome. And it really was a torture dome! It was a physical strain with proper challenges. It was really wacky and different – proper apocalyptic and really enjoyable. I really enjoyed the experience. There is a charity aspect behind it which is great that we’re raising as much money as we can for charity. Good entertainment and a proper little challenge.

Did you have any expectations of what you would be up against?

When we went into it, I think we were all taken aback about how physical and difficult it was. I was shattered every single night! We do a number of challenges each episode and each challenge determine how much money we’ll be playing for at the end of the show. I didn’t realise how difficult it was going to be. The Superhuman Bosses were really talented, we had all sorts!

Why did you want to take part in the series?

For me, I love the unknown and challenging myself. I’m not one to sit at home watching TV with my feet up. I always like to be doing more. The charity aspect, I like doing stuff for charity and raising money. And with it being competitive, I am a really competitive person. It was definitely a show that suited me.

Was there a Superhuman boss that you found particularly challenging going up against and why?

Mr Whippy – he put out candles with his whip. He was quite scary. He was putting out candles while you’re trying to relight them. That was a heart-stopping one. There were all sorts though. The parkour runner was unbelievable but everyone was pretty decent. It was hard to win any of the challenges.

How did you find working alongside the other celebrities?

Everyone was good. It was a great bunch of people. Everyone who did the show was really competitive and that is what you want. You want people to go in there and give it their all and that’s what we all did.

Was there a particular celebrity who really stood out to you in terms of their ability?

The Vivienne – she is wicked! She’s so cool. She was an animal. I was really glad to have her on the team.

The Superhuman Bosses possess weird and wonderful talents. Do you have a special talent you’re proud of?

I’m good for morale. I don’t really have a talent. I’m pretty good at most sports. But in terms of being in that type of arena, my talent was mainly having agility and being able to move around. The coordination I struggled with a bit.

What was your favourite moment from filming the series?

I think my favourite one is when you’re smashing the human piñata. You proper make your money there as you see the notes fall onto the floor. That is good fun. You’re on a bungee and you’re flinging yourself up and down.
