Interviews
Mood | Interview with Mohamed Moses Damar (Saleem)
Can you tell us about Saleem, who is he?
Saleem is a young, conflicted man. And he is also a drug dealer.
What sort of conflict is he having?
He’s a schizophrenic and he has bipolar. He has issues in his mind. He’s got depression, anxiety, he has very personal problems that he has go through just like everyone else.
What attracted you to the role?
Two things that attracted me to the role. One, ethnicity, and two, familiarity. Those are the two things that attracted me to Saleem, it was like I was familiar with his character before becoming the character.
What sort of research did you do for the role?
I did research with the director, and with Nicôle. We did a lot of research on schizophrenics, what they go through, even as characteristics in the small thoughts and beats. The things they think are normal to themselves but to from everyone else’s perspective it’s not normal.
What was it like to work with Nicôle?
Nicôle’s very understanding, she was considerate even though she is doing a lot. She’s the writer of the piece and she is the main actor and at that same time she was trying to make sure I was comfortable on set, as this is my first time performing on TV. I really appreciated her being understanding.
How did you approach being on a big production?
I was very nervous, but what I did is put all the nervousness, anxiety into the character and make sure he was vulnerable. That vulnerability is everything that I felt, I had to align that with the character and make my problems his problems and I showed it on the screen.
What is Mood about?
The story of Mood, it’s about a young woman who’s chasing her dreams of becoming a rapper, a sing-er, but as she’s pursuing her dreams she gets introduced to a whole new world and this dark place and you, as the audience, follow her journey and her trials and tribulations.
Why is it an important story to tell?
The story is about someone chasing their dream, so you watch the trials and tribulations they face and, as the audience watching, it’s important to see the hardship and the difficulties someone goes through just for a dream.
Why do you think people should watch the show?
The story is so authentic, it’s not just your normal musical production. There’s a darker story in this, but it’s a story that needs to be told.
What did you put into Saleem?
It felt as if I could tell my story and my own vulnerability through this character.
