Interviews
Ralph And Katie | Interview with Jamie Marie Leary (Emma Hibbert)
How did you feel when you were first approached to be a part of Ralph & Katie?
I was so excited! I actually cried when I got the call to say I had got it. I had seen some of The A Word and knew how much people loved the show so I was very happy about getting to join the team behind that but also something totally fresh and new and ground-breaking.
What is this series about? Which themes / questions does it explore?
The series to me is about, navigating life and overcoming the challenges thrown our way, and the people you have in your corner to help when those challenges do pop up. Friendship is a big theme in the show, and change, and how we adapt.
Can you tell us about your character?
Emma is a warm, kind person and a loyal friend. She’s always optimistic and trying to help out however she can. We meet her at a turning point in her life at the beginning of the show but in true Emma style she manages to make the best out of a bad situation.
What do you like most, or find most interesting, about your character?
She’s a fixer. She has a good read on people and will usually go out of her way, whether you like it or not, to help.
How much did you know about neurodiversity and the challenges it poses to many lives before you became involved in the series?
I knew that neurodiverse people faced different challenges and had different strengths than people who are not neurodivergent and that those vary from person to person.
What makes this show special? Why is it important to tell this story?
It’s got heart and a team behind it who really care. Our show shouldn’t be Radical because it’s real people and everyday stories, but we don’t all get to see ourselves on screen and represented living our ‘Normal’ lives very often and that’s important.
Can you talk about your experience working on Ralph & Katie? What have you learned about life in general and also more specifically your own life?
I had the best experience ever. Everyone involved in making the show was passionate about it and it felt like we were making something special from the beginning. Sometimes we go to work and with time restrictions and busy sets and lots of things happening – tensions can rise – but on Ralph & Katie everyone was patient and kind to one another as a rule. That should be the standard, we’re doing something we love at the end of the day.
What can the audience expect from Ralph & Katie?
A warm hug of a show, full of love, laughter, and a few tears here and there.
What will you take forward with you into life and career?
Just to remember how lucky I am that I get to do this as a career and how great it is that I get to work with wonderful people and make friends for life.
