How has the story moved on from series one?
The first series was more focused on Daniel and Emma getting together. They had their ups and downs, but we saw them reconcile at the funeral in the last episode and they’ve decided to make a go of it. By the time we pick up now they’re in a serious relationship and they’re kind of making plans for the future. As will be revealed, they’re making some pretty big plans and they’re really pushing forward as a couple. It’s all incredibly quick, which is something that seems to be a theme for them, but they’ve got all these challenges that just keep coming their way and this huge court case that’s hanging over for them. So yeah, there’s a lot going on.
Can you tell us more about the court case?
At the end of series one, Daniel had just turned in some evidence against his dad which led to him being arrested. In the first episode of series two, we’re building up to the trial of his dad, for the murder of his girlfriend’s mum. You find Daniel and Emma in quite a happy place actually in this series. For a split second they’re kind of happy, but then the wheels start to come off a bit.
What was it like being back on set?
The most exciting thing for me was getting to work with Molly Windsor again, she’s a phenomenal actor. I had a blast with her on the first series and obviously things are quite different now with Covid and the regulations. The whole country was in lockdown while we were filming, which made things quite different, as the first series was such a social job. We had such a laugh, and it was one of the friendliest jobs that I’ve ever been on. So, it’s been a bit different, but seeing Molly, Michael, Jennifer and Laura again…just working with all the guys again has been really really nice.
What makes Traces different from other crime dramas?
Well for me, personally, what makes Traces different is that it’s a love story. That’s just purely from my perspective as a character. It’s all about Daniel and Emma, they kind of have this really mad relationship, quite a destructive relationship where they’re both in messed up places in their lives. They fell madly in love really quickly, they’re both really volatile and obviously, they’ve got this wild situation of one of their parents having murdered the other one’s parent. So, there’s just a lot going on for them, but that’s the scripts from Amelia Bullmore. That’s particularly what makes it for me. Obviously, the guys have the whole SIFA thing going on too, the whole forensic thing going on the other side, but for me it’s purely about this love story where you try to see if this couple can survive the mental situation that they’re in.
