Ah, Wilderness (MGM 1935, Lionel Barrymore, Spring Byington)
Eugene O’Neill’s only comedy is the basis for this atmospheric story of life in small-town New England. After high school, a young man steers his way to maturity under the watchful eyes of his parents and despite his introduction to the ways of the world by Beery.
Ah, Wilderness was remade as a musical by MGM in 1948 under the title Summer Holiday. Mickey Rooney appears in both versions, playing mischievous younger brother Tommy in the original and elder brother Richard in the remake.
